One thing I’ve learnt over the years is that every successful GIS project starts with a proper foundation. And that foundation is data.
Just two decades ago, virtually all mapping was “producer-defined” (meaning that, usually government departments, commissioned maps and defined what maps should be about).
For custom projects, “user-defined” mapping can now be created both economically and responsively. Old maps can be incredibly important here.
